Construction Chaos! - A game made for the 2024 GMTK Game Jam.

How to play:

Navigate your way up the building to reach the flag using the falling blocks

Collect the coins as you go - they don't do anything, but you can pretend for now ;)

Controls:

  • A / Left - Move Left
  • D / Right - Move Right
  • W / Space - Jump
  • W / Up - Climb Ladders

Notes:

The theme was "Built To Scale", Immediately I pictured a builder who had to scale a building.

The original plan was to make a game similar to Tetris Plus, where you could move blocks into place for a person trapped inside to try and escape. I wanted to make the game so you could swap between both game modes (Placing blocks, and moving the character inside), but it might have got too confusing, and I didn't know how to program that either... So I settled on having the blocks fall automatically, and you needing to navigate them to escape.

I was experimenting with different ways to move the blocks in the level, the first stage uses keyframe animations, and the second level uses RigidBody physics. In the end I wasn't really happy with either of them...

If I go back to this idea in the future I'll try and tidy up the movements so they actually build a structure.

I learned a lot though, having never used Godot properly before, I focussed all weekend on making sure I understood everything I was following. I now have a notebook full of notes, and definitely feel less daunted by the engine.

Hopefully what I've learned here will help me get back into game dev if I decide to start back up in the future!

Enjoy! :D

Eyy, went to give it a shot but it opens up looking about twice as big as my screen so I can only suss the top left corner

What resolution is your monitor? It was exported at 1920x1080 but maybe that’s too big? I’m used to working with 4K. I can try exporting at 720p later

Try the new version :) - it's the same res but should open in full screen.

Ahhh didn't think to change my screen resolution, I like big chunky icons and such so had set lower. Just played through the game though aaand that was fun. Once I worked out I could jump on stuff as it falls I felt like Quicksilver in one the slow-mo Xmen scenes or Legolas in The Hobbit haha. Good stuff.
